Abstract: This study Evaluates the costs and returns of cassava production in Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers state, Nigeria. Despite Nigeria’s status as the largest producer globally, limited studies have assessed its economic performance in specific areas such as Emohua Local Government Area (LGA), Rivers State. This study examined the socio-economic characteristics of cassava farmers, production costs, profitability, and constraints. A total of 104 farmers were selected using a multi-stage sampling procedure, and data were collected through structured questionnaires and interview scheduled. Analytical tools employed included descriptive statistics, costs and returns analysis and gross margin analysis. Results showed that cassava farmers were mostly male (73.1%), middle-aged, moderately educated, and experienced, with an average of 12-4 years in cassava farming. The average farm size was 3.08 hectares and mean household size 6 persons. Labour was identified as the largest cost component, making cassava production highly labor-intensive. Profitability analysis showed an average gross margin of ?178,073.20 per hectare and a benefit–cost ratio of 2.03, indicating economic viability, though profitability varied across farmers. The enterprise was found to be profitable, with a total revenue of ?27, 643,000, total cost of ?9,123,387 and a total Gross Margin of ?18,519,613 production cycle. Major challenges included high labour and input costs, pest and disease pressure, poor access to credit, weak extension services, and post-harvest losses. The study concludes that cassava farming in Emohua LGA is profitable but constrained, and recommends credit access, subsidized inputs, extension support, construction of infrastructure.
